What is Companionship Care?

 In Bloom Companions Blog

Companionship Care is very much about keeping someone active and alert while assisting them to fulfil their hobbies and interests. Levels of activity can, of course, vary from one person to the next. Some seniors are just happy to have someone pop round for a cup of tea and a conversation or go for a walk, whilst others may wish to be accompanied to the gym or local club.

Inside the home, a little assistance may be required with household tasks that are proving to be more difficult than they used to be. Perhaps when you look out of the window to your garden and wish it could look just a little bit tidier – a companion can prune the roses and pick up the leaves. The desire to cook often fades as time goes by but cooking and eating together can be an enjoyable experience. This can also bring different tastes to the table, while taking into consideration dietary requirements and favourite dishes. As we advance in years it takes an increasing effort to get dressed up for a special occasion. Going out for a meal, to the theatre, or a concert on your own is not as good an experience as being accompanied by a friend or companion, which would make for a lasting memory.

Companions are here for your four-legged friends too, when those walks are getting a little too strenuous. They can also accompany you with your much-loved pet on your favourite route. Something that is often thought about but doesn’t always seem possible, is a visit to see family or friends living locally and further afield. Your care may be being providing in Cheltenham or the surrounding areas, but if relations or friends live in York, a little planning means your chosen care companion can accompany you there if wished. Or possibly you may wish them to assist you on a holiday you’ve always dreamt about.

Companionship care does not involve any medical care, however, prompts to take your medication on time are fine but they don’t administer it. A companion can be a listening ear and a source of comfort if you are at all nervous whilst attending a doctor’s, dental/hospital, or any other appointments or meeting. Companionship Care also does not involve any personal care – unlike someone providing personal care, they don’t assist with bathing, toileting or dressing – although they would be happy to pick out an outfit with you!

The majority of people who are Care Companions have had numerous years as carers, with qualifications, but it may not always be the case. Some companions come from having experience in looking after family members. Many of these carers feel a sense of pride and satisfaction that they were able to make a real difference in their loved one’s all-round health and well-being. It is this fulfilling experience that has encouraged many to continue this dedicated and worthwhile role, to help others, to give confidence and pleasure of companionship in late life.
